  • Meta description text and whether it truncates around 920 px
  • Missing, empty or duplicated title and description
  • Canonical URL and robots meta (noindex, nofollow)
  • Open Graph and Twitter card tags
  • H1 on the page versus the title

Cost of one run: 1 request. Results for the same URL are kept for a few minutes, so running twice is free and instant.

Questions

How long should a title tag be?

Google cuts titles by width, not characters: about 600 pixels on desktop, which is roughly 50 to 60 characters. Put the words people search for first and the brand last.

Why does Google show a different title than my title tag?

Google rewrites titles it thinks are poor: keyword lists, boilerplate repeated across pages, titles that do not match the H1. Make the title and H1 agree and describe the page plainly.

Does the meta description affect ranking?

Not directly. It affects whether people click. A specific description that answers the query gets a better click-through rate than a generic one, and that does feed back into rankings.
