Add a User to Segment

Use this checklist to add the collaborator to Segment.

Prerequisites

  • Identify the Segment workspace (production, staging) the collaborator should join.
  • Determine the workspace role (Owner, Admin, Member, Read-only) and any specific source access required.
  • If SCIM/SSO is in use, prepare the user in your identity provider.
  • Ensure you have Workspace Owner or Admin rights.

Invite the Service Account

  1. Sign into Segment and open Settings → Team Members.
  2. Click Invite and enter the collaborator’s service account email.
  3. Choose the appropriate Workspace Role (Member is typical; Admin for broader management).
  4. If fine-grained permissions are enabled, assign access to the required sources/destinations.
  5. Send the invite and log the request in your IAM tracker.

After Inviting

  • Monitor the Pending Invites section until acceptance.
  • Share any VPN, MFA, or SSO requirements with the collaborator’s team.
  • Update your access inventory with the invite date, role, and assigned sources.

Troubleshooting

  • Invite not delivered: Allowlist @segment.com and resend.
  • SSO enforced: Ensure the user exists in the correct IdP group before logging in.
  • Access denied to specific sources: Revisit Settings → Sources → Access Management to grant the correct permissions.
